Short-Term Rental Permitting and Certification The City of East Tawas adopted Ordinance No. 359 on December 5, 2022, to begin allowing short-term rental use of properties in the City.  The new ordinance will govern the use effective December 26, 2022. The City plant to begin accepting applications on January 9, 2022. Applications will be accepted and reviewed as received. 

Short-Term Rentals:
Short-Term Rental means the commercial use of renting a dwelling unit, or portion thereof for a period of time less than thirty-one (31) consecutive days.  This does not include approved bed and breakfast establishments, hotels/motels, tenant housing, or campgrounds.

Short Term rentals are considered a special use in High-Density Residential District (HDR), Medium Density Residential District (MDR), Multifamily Residential District (MFR), Office Service Commercial District (OSC), and Tawas Lake Waterfront Residential District (TLWFR) with a maximum of 30 permitted properties. In these zoning districts you are required to apply for a permit and annual certification as stated in Ordinance No. 359.  

Short-term rentals are a permitted use in the Highway Service Commercial District (HSC), Waterfront District (WF) and the Central Business District (CBD).

The number of available permits will be posted on this webpage. When we have reached our maximum of 30 short-term rental permits, we will not accept new applications. If openings become available, this webpage will be updated.
