Election Administration 
The City Clerk is the election administrator for all elections held in the City.  The entire City is one voting precinct and city, school, county, state and federal elections are held at 760 Newman Street in either the City Council Chambers or the Community Center gymnasium depending on the expected turnout for the election.  The following qualifications need to be met in order to register to vote in the City of East Tawas: A United States citizen and at least 18 years of age by Election Day. 

Click here to visit the Secretary of State's Voter Information Center to register to vote, check your voter registration status, see upcoming election ballots, complete an absentee ballot application for a specified election and apply to work at the polls.  Individuals may also register to vote at the City Clerk's Office, the County Clerk's Office, any Armed Forces recruitment office, social services agencies or at any Secretary of State Office. 

By law, absentee ballots are to be available 45 days prior to an election.   You may also request an absentee ballot application at City Hall by mail or in person. The City of East Tawas will maintain a Permanent Absentee Ballot Voter List.

Absentee ballots for elections are available 45 days prior to the election.  An absentee ballot application will need to be completed if you have not yet signed up to receive an Absentee Ballot for all future elections for the Presidential Primary on February 27, 2024.   You can complete an Absentee Ballot Application if you are not on the permanent Absentee Ballot list 75 days prior to an election.  Ballots are available 45 days prior to the election and will be sent to those voters who have already requested to be on the permanent Absentee "Ballot" list.  Please contact the Clerk's Office if you have any questions or concerns. 

Due to the passing of Proposal 2 at the November 2022 General Election, the City of East Tawas will be maintaining a Permanent Ballot list for voters who wish to vote absentee and qualify under state law to vote by absentee ballot.  All voters on the Permanent Ballot list will automatically be sent an absentee ballot for each election scheduled in the City of East Tawas.  If you would like to be placed on our Permanent Ballot list to vote absentee in all future elections, please contact the City Clerk's Office by phone 989-362-6161, email to: jpotts@easttawas.com, or mail to: City Clerk, City of East Tawas, 760 Newman Street, East Tawas, MI 48730.

PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY, FEBRUARY 27, 2024

This is to notify registered voters of the City of East Tawas, Michigan, that the Presidential Primary will be held in the gymnasium of the East Tawas Community Center, 760 Newman Street, on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 from 7:00 a.m. until all electors in line at 8:00 p.m. are given the opportunity to cast their ballot.  Early Voting will be held the nine (9) consecutive days prior to the election beginning on Saturday, February 17 through Sunday, February 25, 2024 and will be conducted at the Tawas Township Hall, at the intersection of M-55 and McArdle Road, Tawas City, Michigan.  For more information, please contact the Clerk's Office.  

There will be two ballots to choose from, one for the selection of the Democratic Presidential Candidate and the other for the section of the Republican Presidential Candidate.   You must select either a Democratic or Republican ballot prior to receiving an absentee ballot or at the polls on election day.  

This polling location is accessible for persons with disabilities and voting instructions are available in audio.

An absentee ballot may be obtained by submitting an application to receive an absentee ballot or a written request for an absentee ballot to the City Clerk by mail at 760 Newman Street, East Tawas, Michigan 48730, in person or by email to jpotts@easttawas.com prior to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 23, 2024.
